Our volunteer selection process is designed with the utmost care, especially as we are responsible for the well-being and development of young people. We prioritise not only sailing experience but also the ability to positively impact youth development. This comprehensive approach ensures we choose the best candidates to join our team.

To volunteer in a sailing capacity, you must be over 18 years of age and hold, at a minimum, the RYA Day Skipper qualification.

The volunteer process is as follows:

Apply Online: Complete and submit this application form.
Application Review: We will review your application. If successful, you will be invited to a phone/online/in-person interview and set up on the DBS system.
Interview: During the interview, please bring the ID documents used in your DBS application.
DBS Processing: If you pass the interview, we will process your DBS check.
Supernumerary weekend: Once your DBS is returned, you will be invited to our supernumerary weekend at the end of April
At the end of the supernumerary weekend you will be recommended to join the afterguard and sail as a supernumerary, watch officer or mate in the Project.

However, it is crucial to ensure we select the most suitable volunteers who can provide a safe and enriching experience for our young participants. Please provide a list of any relevant qualifications you hold that would support your volunteering application. If you would like to volunteer as a member of the sea staff (Afterguard), please check all the pertinent Royal Yachting Association (RYA) qualifications you hold. You can add additional qualifications that are not listed in the checkboxes, please add one qualification per row.

Please note we require sailing volunteers to hold (at the minimum) the RYA Day Skipper qualification or, you must be able to demonstrate the following pre-requisites: 5 days, 150 miles and at least 4 night hours onboard a sailing yacht. Navigation and theory knowledge to Day Skipper Shorebased level.

I consent to be given emergency medical treatment, including but not limited to the administration of dental treatment, anaesthesia, and blood transfusion, should it be necessary and authorise the vessel’s Skipper to give such permission as may be required for such treatment to proceed.

Rona Sailing Project is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. I agree to be vetted by the Disclosure and Barring Service and will disclose any criminal history as required by the DBS service. I understand the DBS process is administered by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) on behalf of Rona Sailing Project. I have read the Government's Standard / Enhanced Check Privacy Policy for applicants and I understand how DBS will process my personal data and the options available to me for submitting an application.
